21 Ways To Form The Habit-at of Peace


Today is International Peace Day, the day we all recognise the issues we face as residents of this planet.

A planet split into roughly 200 segments we call countries. Each country we split a few times with borders and we name them States. Within those States we split them again into Regions, Shires, Cities, Suburbs, Councils etc.

After that we continue to divide people by economic status, ethnicities, majorities and minorities. We sort people by gender, sexual preferences, religious and political views.

We divide again by heath status, age and  physical appearance. Split once more by popularity, diet preferences, musical choices, addictions and even telecommunication devices.

We then offer up all those pieces, hang them over our heads, with a sign that claims ‘IDENTITIY’.

This is the world we live in. A world divided, split into so many pieces we can’t find a way to become whole again.

Peace is possible, regardless of how many boarders there are between us.

Peace is a choice, a mindset that consist of love, acceptance and mutual respect. Our only true identity is ‘human’.

Someone once told me that it takes 21 days to create a habit. Science says 66 days, regardless if we all attempted to find real ways to continuously show kindness perhaps one day all these lines dividing us would disappear.

Peace is not a solo mission, no one man or government has the power to accomplish it alone. It requires all of us. We can contribute by continuously pushing kindness to the forefront of our hearts until it becomes our biggest habit, our human identity. Leave hate where it should be, far behind us.



Here are 21 to ways to show a little kindness to get us started.

  1. Volunteer your time to help others.
  2. Cook a meal for elderly person or your sick friend.
  3. Give someone a compliment or words of encouragement.
  4. Bite your tongue, practice the ‘If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all’
  5. Give people the benefit of the doubt
  6. Offer someone your seat.
  7. Collect food or goods vouchers and place them in the post box of a struggling family
  8. Offer your umbrella to the old couple caught in the rain. Be thoughtful.
  9. Find ways to give your excess (food, belongings, time) to people in need.
  10. Foster an abused animal
  11. Sit next to the person being bullied and show them they are not alone.
  12. Donate your old books to a hospital or nursing home.
  13. Work with organisations that want to make a positive impact on our world.
  14. Give a new mum a night off, offer to baby sit.
  15. Volunteer abroad
  16. Offer work experience to someone who has been out of work for a while.
  17. Step in or alert the authorities when you witness or suspect abuse
  18. Be inclusive, treat everyone equally. Be known as a welcoming person.
  19. Help your co-workers so you can all leave on time.
  20. Walk your friend home or offer them a lift.
  21. Be present and available when someone needs you.
